Stay up to date on the Waialae Nui market
Situated just north of Kahala, the established community of Waialae Nui is located on the mountain side of Waialae Avenue. Initially developed in the late 1950s, the neighborhood is bordered by Waialae Iki on the east and Wilhelmina Rise on the west. The area has become increasingly popular in recent years, in large part because of its proximity to shopping, beaches, entertainment, dining, and recreation, as well as the breathtaking views offered by many of the homes here.
Waialae Nui is comprised of three areas, each boasting its own unique character and atmosphere. That said, all of the areas enjoy easy access to the freeway and proximity to Kahala Beach and Kahala Mall. The portion known as Waialae Nui Ridge includes Halekoa Drive beginning at the 1430 block, as well as the adjacent streets, extending to the top of the hill. Home lots in the Waialae Nui Ridge area typically range in size from 5,000 square feet to 13,000 square feet, and many rim lot properties in Waialae Nui Ridge boast spectacular views. Adding to the appeal of this neighborhood, utility lines are hidden underground beginning at the 1600 block of Halekoa Drive. This area encompasses the summit on Aha Aina and Honolulu’s highest residential real estate elevation. You’ll also find several gated luxury communities here with custom homes on larger-than-usual lots ranging in size from 14,000 to 18,000 square feet.
The other areas of Waialae Nui are called Waialae Nui Valley and Lower Waialae Nui. The Valley consists of two primary roads, both of which are north of Waialae Avenue. In addition to the adjacent side streets, it is Hunakai Street beginning at the 1300 block and Kilauea Avenue starting at the 4800 block. Home lots in Waialae Nui Valley generally range from around 7,500 to 10,000 square feet, and the neighborhood encompasses Kahala Towers, Tropic Gardens, Waialae Gardens, and Tropicana Village-Makai, all condominiums and townhouse communities with swimming pools. Lower Waialae Nui includes all of Malia Street, Ainakoa Avenue, and the adjacent streets including those from Luinakoa Street down to Halekoa Drive. Homes in Lower Waialae Nui generally sit on modest-sized lots ranging from 5,000 to 10,000 square feet. Of course, this is just a snapshot of the diverse real estate available in Waialae Nui.
